A healthy mami is a healthy family

Two weeks ago, I wrote about the balancing act of motherhood. As moms, we often wear many hats. Between work, house chores, and spending time with the kids, it’s hard enough to fit much else in the schedule. Try squeezing in a side project (like this blog) or a little bit of personal time (to work out or read for pleasure), and it’s easy to get burned out JUST by trying to balance everything.

Coincidentally and in a perfect moment of serendipity, two weeks ago, I also met a fellow blogger, Krishna Davenport, founder of Baobab Wellness. As Krishna and I exchanged our stories about being relatively new moms, working moms, and everything else in between, we realized how important it is for moms to take time out of their busy schedules to indulge in self-care. And while it’s very important, we rarely make it a priority to do so. It seems like everything and everyone always comes before us. Kids, work, laundry…in most cases, there are very few chances for us moms to take care of ourselves. And when we do, who’s watching the kids?!? Are we ordering take out? What’s another pile of laundry?

One way Krishna is helping other moms is by hosting a Baobab Fit event this Saturday December 3rd. Baobab Fit is a health and wellness workshop for Mothers of Color in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. The event will feature workout stations, healthy recipes prepared by a local chef, and a DJ! Oh, and did I mention there will be on-site baby-sitting at no charge? What I like the most about this event is its focus on empowering moms in the community and educating them about healthy food options and wellness activities. Particularly in Brownsville, where access to health and wellness centers are not as readily available as in other parts of the city.

If you live in the area, I definitely encourage you to attend! Making our well-being (mental, physical, and emotional) a priority is the first step to taking care of our loved ones! After all, a healthy mami is a healthy family!

What do you do to self-care?

  1. I actually never thought about my weekly hours from this perspective. Most of the time, I do feel as if I’m just rushing through the day. Good read!
